Quite by accident, a few years ago, I bought chives. Since then, I have never regretted it - he is so good! Growing chives from seeds did not bring me much trouble. It can be planted everywhere - it doesn’t matter whether this place is shaded or sunny. This is a perennial onion with a small onion. It grows with bushes. One bush consists of many bulbs - at least twenty, or maybe even more. The height of the plant is only 25-30 cm.
Chives that is how it grows
Thin, tubular, awl-shaped leaflets-feathers in the spring are tender, tasty and less sharp than the onion, and most importantly, it is always at hand. Later, the leaves coarse, but they can always be updated. Cut the old coarse, grow new tender. I don’t take the bulbs of chives out of the ground, for food I pick only leaves-feathers from early spring to frosts, and they may not come on our Kuban.
Chives are not picky about soil. I had a small place near the fence. Before that there was a compost heap. The sun at this place only until noon, and then the shadow of the dogwood. Since then, he has been growing there.
It’s easy to look after him. In the spring, you need to remove the dry feathers, slightly loosen the soil around. You can sprinkle with ash, compost. In order for chives to remain green and juicy longer, they should be watered regularly in dry times. And, of course, do not let the weeds clog the bushes.
A characteristic feature of chives is overgrowth.
How to grow chives
From a single sprout planted in spring, separated from the mother plant, a whole bush is obtained by autumn. She shared bushes several times in the fall, but only then, to plant in a pot, use fresh herbs in the winter. And it happened that friends asked to share. I have not tried to collect my seeds and sow them. But, I heard that its seeds can be sown throughout the growing season.
The cultivation of chives from seeds is the same as ordinary onions. The trouble, however, is somewhat larger: the seeds are small. To distribute the seeds more evenly along the groove, you can first outline it by pressing a board edge into the soil.
At the first stage of cultivation, it is very important to destroy weeds on time, since the emerging tender shoots of chives are strongly suppressed by weeds. But this must be done carefully. Since onion sprouts easily break out together with weeds.
The roots of young onions are very weak - drying of the top soil layer is unacceptable for them, so use a watering can with the smallest holes for watering.
By the way, chives also take care of themselves. In me, it propagates by self-seeding. This plant is quite frost-resistant, resistant to disease, in one place can grow up to 5-10 years. And its ability to winter distillation makes it possible to use this variety all year round.
