Fiber boards (the second name is hardboard) today are used in a variety of fields. Fiberboard is used for insulation of roofs, walls and floors, the construction of interior partitions, from which they make doors and furniture. The indisputable advantage of modern material is its water resistance, preservation of geometric parameters, even with prolonged exposure to moisture and steam. Upon purchase, the sheets are evaluated by density, size, production time, storage and transportation conditions. A special role is played by the correct choice of the thickness and dimensions of fiberboard: the possibility of obtaining the necessary working area, the strength characteristics of the finished product and a reasonable amount of waste depend on this.
Why do you need to know the dimensions of hardboard in advance?
When performing construction and finishing works, they usually always buy whole plates. To do this, calculate their total area with a margin for cutting. In some cases, small pieces of fiberboard can be bought at woodworking shops or trading and manufacturing companies, sawing boards into billets for further production. In this case, the retail trade includes balances, the cost of which includes services for their sawing.
In order to economically cut the sheets for thermal insulation or finishing works, careful measurements of the walls, ceiling or floor are made. After that, standard plates of different sizes are compared, schemes for their cutting are compiled, and the number of scraps is compared. As a result, they choose the best option to reduce costs.
Knowing the required dimensions of fiberboards will allow you to decide on the choice of transport, find a convenient place to store sheets
Standard fiberboard sheet sizes
In fact, hardboard is an improved analogue of particleboard. Its main difference is the increased density of the material and, accordingly, its strength. These parameters are improved due to more thorough grinding of raw materials and subsequent pressing under high pressure. Depending on the characteristics of production and purpose, the plates have the following classification:
- soft
- semi-solid;
- hard and superhard.

In general, the thickness of plates of different densities ranges from 3.2 to 25 mm, but each group has its own line of this size. Sheets of low and medium density are the thickest (8, 12, 16 or 25 mm). Semi-solid slabs are available in thicknesses of 6, 8, 12 mm. Hard and superhard samples are the thinnest, their thickness is 3.2 mm, 4.5 mm, 6.0 mm.
The standard sizes of fiberboard sheets of various hardness are approximately the same and are determined to a greater extent by the capabilities of the equipment used by a particular manufacturer. Limit values of length are from 1220 to 3660 mm, widths are from 1200 to 2140 mm. More accurate product dimensions corresponding to regulatory documents are given in table 1.
Table 1: Dimensions of fiberboard sheets according to GOST
Plate type | Length mm | Width mm |
Soft | 1220; 1600; 1800; 2500; 2700; 3000 | 1220 |
Semi-hard, hard and superhard | 1220; 1700;1800; 2050; 2500; 2745; 3050; 3350; 3660 | 610;1220; 1525; 1830; 2410 |
In addition to the main series of lengths, there are maximum dimensional indicators: for soft fiberboards it is 5.5 m, for solid - 6.1 m. They are rarely used in private construction and are intended for industrial purposes.
Note to GOST 4598-86 allows the manufacture of plates to order with additional dimensions not shown in the table. For this, non-waste cutting of products of maximum length is carried out.
Applicability of fiberboard sheets of different thicknesses
As you noticed, the strength and thickness of the sheets produced are inversely related. In this regard, before starting work, you should decide on the choice of fiberboard for its intended purpose.
- If the goal is to manufacture heat-insulating lining of ceilings, walls and ceilings, it makes sense to purchase porous soft plates (they are similar to felt), the thickness of which is determined according to the heat engineering calculation. This type of fiberboard is also an excellent sound insulator. When arranging the floor, plates with a thickness of 8-12 mm are used in the form of a substrate for the floor in order to level the unevenness of the base.
- The semi-solid type of fiberboard (resembles thick cardboard) with a density of 400-800 kg / m3 and a thickness of up to 12 mm has average bending and tensile strengths that allow them to be used in furniture production. From this category make the rear walls of the cabinets and drawers. In construction, semi-solid fiberboard sheets are laid as a substrate for flooring.
- Solid fiberboard with an average density of 850 kg / m3 have high strength and low porosity. The small thickness (up to 6 mm) makes them an excellent material for wall cladding, interior partitions, ceilings, doors and rear walls of furniture.
- Superhard sheets (density more than 950 kg / m3), in contrast to solid counterparts, are impregnated with resins and heat-treated during manufacture, and then cached (glued with a PVC-based synthetic film). Due to their small thickness, they are used for facing furniture, doors, and floors.
How are sheet sizes and properties related?
It should be noted that the material with a small thickness and a large area is more prone to deformation. For this reason, fiberboard of a soft group can bend without losing their integrity. Thin sheets with increased hardness are not able to bend, therefore, when transporting them or carrying them by hand, you should be especially careful not to break the products.
Hard plates with a maximum thickness for them (8-12 mm) have higher rigidity, therefore, during transportation and machining they are much more resistant to mechanical stress.
Preliminary calculation and selection of fiberboard by size
After selecting the material for the intended purpose and thickness, it remains to calculate its total quadrature. To do this, measure the length and width of the working surfaces or take the appropriate parameters in the design documentation. Multiplying the linear dimensions, we obtain the area of each plot, and after their addition, the total number of sheets for the purchase.
The second stage of the calculation is the optimization of the cutting of fiberboard boards. This is done using a compact arrangement of the shapes of blanks on sheet materials. The process is carried out in various ways.
- Drawing a nesting card. To do this, the paper depicts the details of the scale, placing them as close to each other as possible. Then draw a rectangular outline covering all the images. After that, a sheet is selected for sale, the dimensions of which slightly exceed the resulting rectangle. The method is used if the parts have a simple shape.
- Layout layout. Drawn on a scale figures are cut out and create combinations of mutual arrangement. The goal is the same - to minimize the area occupied by the details.
- Using special programs. They solve the problem of optimal placement of parts' contours in the given dimensional boundaries of the source material. As the initial information, the dimensions and number of parts, technological data, and the dimensions of the sheet blank are introduced.
Comparative analysis of prices for fiberboard from different manufacturers
The cost of fiberboard depends on the density of the plates, their linear dimensions, the price policy of the manufacturer, the availability of intermediaries. Imported products will definitely cost more than domestic ones, and quality does not always win. To consciously choose fiberboard from Russian companies, they compare prices for products of the same thickness and hardness - for example, sheets of a hard group with a thickness of 3.2 mm (table 2). For clarity, price figures are given per square meter.
Table 2: Comparison of prices for fiberboard in Moscow
Dimensions of the sheet, mm | Manufacturer | Product price, rub. | Price, rub / m2 |
2140 x 1220 | Nelidovsky MLC | 122 | 46,73 |
2440 x 1220 | DrevPlit-Group | 120 | 40,31 |
2750 x 1220 | Sukhon | 159 | 47,39 |
It is desirable that the manufacturer is as close as possible - this will reduce the transport component of the price. Save money will help the purchase of wholesale lots.
When planning the use of fiberboard for repair and construction works, you should carefully select the material according to its functional features. A rational approach to the selection of sheet sizes will reduce material waste, and cost estimates from different manufacturers will significantly reduce repair costs.
